Release date of Apple iPhone 16: When will the new phones be available?
The release date of the iPhone 16 is by far the most predictable of all the aspects of the device. Apple’s release schedule is a well-known and consistent phenomenon.
Tuesdays or Wednesdays in the first two weeks of September are nearly always when the company unveils its new lineup of smartphones. The iPhone 15 was revealed on Tuesday, September 5, 2023; the iPhone 14 was revealed on Wednesday, September 7, 2022; and the iPhone 13 was revealed on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, to give you an idea of the prior iPhone release dates.
Every week on Friday, the iPhone goes on sale for general consumption one week later on Friday of that same week, after being available for pre-order. Therefore, we anticipate Apple to reveal the iPhone 16 either on September 2 or 3, or September 13 or 14, during the first or second week of September. Then, on Friday, September 13th or Friday, September 20th, the iPhone 16 might be made available.
Apple iPhone 16 pricing: What would the new phones set you back?
The rumour mill predicts an increase in the price of the iPhone each and every year. Before the device’s release in the UK in 2022, leakers had indicated that the price of the iPhone 14 would rise significantly.
When it came to the iPhone 15, the analysts’ predictions came true; the iPhone 15 would actually see a significant price cut in the UK, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max would continue to retail for the same amount as the model from the previous year.
Although there haven’t been any leaks regarding the iPhone 16’s possible price yet, there is conjecture (as there usually is) that it will eventually cost more.
According to Nikkei Asia and Tokyo-based research firm Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, manufacturing the iPhone 15 came at a significantly higher cost than making the iPhone 14, and Apple chose to absorb the additional expense rather than pass it along to customers.
According to Nikkei Asia, the standard iPhone 15’s components cost sixteen percent more than those of the iPhone 14, while the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max all cost ten, eight, and twelve percent more than their predecessors.
According to the report, “the company’s bottom line will eventually take a hit” if Apple keeps raising prices on customers. Minatake Kashio, CEO of Fomalhaut, also hinted that “Apple might try to raise prices next year with models other than the Pro Max.”
Will it increase in 2019? Nobody can say for sure, but given the ongoing crisis in the cost of living, we anticipate that Apple will maintain the same pricing for its iPhone while continuing to defray production costs. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus could retail for £799 and £899, respectively, if the prices remain the same. The starting price for the iPhone 16 Pro would be £999, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max might cost £1,199.
Design and display of the Apple iPhone 16
Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s get to the important stuff, starting with the design of the iPhone 16 series. I’ll start with the display.
1. The screens on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will soon be even larger.
When the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are released in the fall, there are rumors that they will sport even larger screens. Reliable leakers released several reports in May of last year, and they surfaced once more in April.
Reliable leaker Ming-Chi Kuo stated on May 16, 2023, that the iPhone 16 Pro would have a slightly bigger display in order to make room for a new periscope camera, similar to the one found on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. A few weeks prior, on May 9, 2023, Display Supply Chain Consultants’ Ross Young asserted that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would have a larger aspect ratio, measuring 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. This would result in larger screens and, unavoidably, larger batteries for users.
The CADs of the suspected iPhone 16 Pro Max were leaked by 9to5Mac on May 22, 2023. The publication stated that the device would feature a larger body and a 6.9-inch display. It will only be marginally wider, but taller. The website also hinted that, in keeping with the branding of the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 16 Pro Max might decide to forgo the Max name and instead use the iPhone 16 Pro Ultra.
But the size of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is anticipated to stay the same. For the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Plus, that is 6.1 in and 6.7 in, respectively.
Let’s go back to 2024. Dummy photos of the anticipated iPhone 16 models were leaked by Apple insider Sonny Dickson on April 29. The models are said to have larger screens on the pro models and the same-sized displays on the non-pro models.
2. The bezels of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may be thinner.
The bezels on the next generation of iPhone 16 models may be thinner as well. The report, which MacRumors shared, claims that the makers of iPhone displays have created a new kind of border structure technology that can reduce the size of the bezels, enabling companies to make displays with smaller internal circuitry. This information is based on a report published in the Korean publication The Elec. The article also claims that micro-lens technology may be used to improve the brightness and power efficiency of the OLED screens in the iPhone 16.
The complete measurements of the iPhone 16 Pro Max were leaked by trustworthy leaker UniverseIce on June 5, 2024. They showed that it would be significantly larger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max but have even thinner bezels. The leaker claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will measure 163 x 77.5 x 8 mm. This is how it stacks up against the iPhone 15 Pro Max:
iPhone 16 Pro Max | iPhone 15 Pro Max | |
Width | 77.5 mm | 76.7mm |
Height | 163mm | 159.9mm |
Thickness | 8.26mm | 8.25mm |
Screen size | 6.9in | 6.7in |
Screen bezel | 1.15mm | 1.55mm |
3. Perhaps the brightest iPhones ever are the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Weibo leaker Instant Digital stated in May 2024 that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have displays with a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits, which is 20% brighter than the iPhone 15 Pro’s 1,000 nits. Since the iPhone 13’s SDR hasn’t changed, a 20% increase in brightness ought to be very noticeable (assuming it’s real). There will be more rumors soon.
4. The iPhone 16 Plus may be the final iteration of the 6.7-inch base model.
Apple tipster Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants stated on April 17, 2024, that the iPhone 16 Plus might be the final entry-level iPhone model to have a lovely 6.7-inch screen. Young claims that the iPhone 17 Plus will sport a smaller screen that falls in between the dimensions of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This implies that the display of the iPhone 17 Plus may get smaller, possibly to 6.5 inches.
5. Each and every iPhone 16 will have an enhanced action button.
The action button, which took the place of the mute switch on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, is anticipated to be added to the entire iPhone 16 lineup. According to alleged internal documents obtained by MacRumors, the action button may transition from a mechanical to a capacitive touch button, adding additional functionality.
According to MacRumors, the new action button will have “tact-switching functionality and a force sensor that detects changes in pressure.” We believe you will be able to use the button to execute multiple actions rather than the current one programmed action, though we are not entirely sure what that means.
6. The capture button on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be changed.
According to numerous reports, the iPhone 16 will have a new capture button. All four of the iPhone 16 devices, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s claims at the end of the previous year, would have a new capture button meant for taking videos. The new capture button may be used to quickly record spatial videos for the Apple Vision Pro, if it is true (we’re just speculating here).
7. The camera array on the iPhone 16 rear will be arranged differently to assist with spatial videos
There are also rumors that Apple is altering the rear camera arrangement of the entry-level iPhone 16 models. Apple Insider published alleged dummy leaks of the iPhone 16, and the new cameras may be oriented in a vertical stack rather than diagonally. The iPhone 15 Pro currently uses stacked cameras for spatial video.
8. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will come in seven different colours
We always get a lot of iPhone tips from the Chinese social media site Weibo, and the latest comes from Fixed Focus Digital. The leaker claims that the base iPhone 16 will come in seven different colours this year. As well as the yellow, blue, green, black and pink seen on the iPhone 15, white and purple are rumoured to be added to the line-up. They did not mention anything about the iPhone 16 Pro colours, however.
Apple iPhone 16 specs
Although there have been many reports regarding the iPhone 16’s design, there are still not many leaks regarding the device’s specifications.
9. An A18 chip will be included with every iPhone 16 model.
One intriguing rumor stems from a research note published in March 2024 by analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities, indicating that the new A18 chip will be included in all four iPhone 16 models. Apple typically saves its newest processor for its Pro line of smartphones, giving the base models the processor from the previous year.
Still, there will be variations. The A18 is rumored to power the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, while the A18 Pro chip may be used in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. More AI features will presumably be possible with the A16 Pro’s increased neural engine and more cores (we’ll go into more detail about that below).
10. Apple could resolve any issues with the iPhone overheating.
When they first obtained their hands on the iPhone 15 last year, many others also voiced complaints about it overheating. According to reports, Apple is investigating the heat issue. According to Apple insider Kosutami, the company may utilize a graphene thermal system in the iPhone 16 to address this problem.
11. Every new iPhone 16 will have a wifi chip upgrade.
Additionally, it is said that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series of smartphones will come with an improved wifi chip. The dependable Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo claims that while wifi 6E, which is currently available on the iPhone 15 Pro, will be added to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro will support wifi 7.
12. A new stacked iPhone 16 battery may be available, offering the longest battery life to date.
According to Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 phones will make use of stacked battery technology, which is presently employed in the EV market, for their batteries. This might result in a bigger battery capacity, which would enable even quicker charging times and greater wireless charging capacity.
Another prediction from reputable Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo states that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have the longest battery life of any iPhone ever produced. According to the leaker, the 16 Pro Max battery will have a higher energy density while keeping the battery cell’s current dimensions. Thus, without adding any additional internal space, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may have a longer battery life than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Features of the Apple iPhone 16
We got the most informed look at the iPhone 16’s features yet when Apple hosted its WWDC event in June and unveiled iOS 18 to the public. While we don’t know what will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 yet, we do know that only the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 will be getting Apple Intelligence features (AI).
13. iPhone 16 will have system-wide rewriting, proofreading and summarising text tools
The iPhone 16 with iOS 18’s Apple Intelligence will feature brand-new systemwide writing tools that will let users rewrite, proofread and summarise text almost everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages and third-party apps. From the keynote, it seems like it’ll be Grammarly for your iPhone.
14. You’ll be able to generate your own images via text
Apple Intelligence will also bring onboard something called Image Playground, letting you generate fun images in seconds using your own text prompts. You’ll be able to choose from three different image styles – animation, illustration or sketch. Image Playground will be built directly into apps including messages and in a dedicated app. We presume this will be a feature reserved for iPhone 15 Pro devices and up, including the iPhone 16.
15. You’ll be able to make photo movie memories using AI
A new Photos feature for iOS 18 and iPhone 16 includes photo memories in movies. You’ll be able to type out a description of what you want and Apple Intelligence will pull out the photos, arranging them into a movie with its own narrative and arc. Another Photos feature mimics the Google eraser tool found on Google Pixel, letting you remove distractions and people in the background from images.
16. Siri is finally getting smarter
Siri, once considered the dumbest voice assistant, is finally getting an AI boost to power. It will become more natural, contextually relevant and personal, having full-fledged conversations that understand what you meant from previous prompts. It will pull together lots of different bits of information from different parts of your iPhone to bring you the information you need, searching your Calendar and Mail to surface when your mate’s birthday is.
17. AI features will work on-device until it needs to use server-based models
iOS 18 will be smart enough to switch between on-device and server-based models, mostly relying on on-device AI to complete tasks that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers. Apple says that when requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute, data will not be stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfil the user’s requests.
Apple iPhone 16 cameras
Every new iPhone brings a significant spec bump for the cameras. What other rumors exist regarding the base iPhone 16 models other than the new vertical camera array?
18. An improved telephoto lens and ultra-wide camera will be included in the iPhone 16 Pro.
A research note from Jeff Pu that 9to5Mac was able to obtain states that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a 48MP ultra-wide camera, which is an upgrade from the iPhone 15 Pro’s 12MP ultra-wide camera. Instead of just the Pro Max model, the 12x telephoto lens could be available for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Additionally, according to MacRumors, the new sophisticated tetraprism telephoto lens will be available on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro lacks the tetra prism lens that allows users to zoom in up to 5x on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple is reportedly planning to release a larger iPhone, which will allow them to integrate this 5x tetraprism lens into both of the iPhone 16 Pro models.
19. Apple is addressing glare on lenses.
On the Naver blog on April 15, a Korean news aggregator stated that Apple was testing an anti-reflective optical coating for the cameras on its upcoming iPhone models. With the use of “atomic layer deposition,” this coating is supposed to enable Apple to remove glare and lens flare from photos by applying an incredibly thin layer to components. The user states that the coating will be available on Apple’s upcoming line of professional devices, which may refer to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max instead of the iPhone 16 Pro.
The conclusion: rumors of an Apple iPhone 16
The next generation of iPhones—the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max—appear to be very promising improvements over their predecessors, though anything that Apple hasn’t already said should be taken with a grain of salt. Improved action buttons, a new capture button for capturing video (perhaps even spatial videos), and sophisticated AI features that will make Siri more intelligent than ever are all on the horizon. The entire lineup will be faster and more potent, and the cameras may receive significant upgrades. It appears to be an exciting upgrade all around. More rumors will be added to this page, which we will keep updating.
