OH MY! President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump had a major face off at the 2024 presidential debate on Thursday (June 27).
The live event saw both politicians go head-to-head in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the first time Biden and Trump have met since they ran for president in 2020.
Trump’s Views On Abortion
The 90-minute presidential debate between President Biden and Donald Trump was hosted by CNN. Their longest conversation was about their views on abortion.
CNBC reported that Trump alleged that Biden supported abortions until birth, a claim Biden denied, affirming his support for Roe v. Wade, a well-established precedent in the United States.
When questioned about abortion medication during the presidential debate, Trump emphasized that he does not intend to prohibit it.
“First of all, the Supreme Court just approved the abortion pill, and I agree with that decision to have done that, and I will not block it! 51 years ago, you had Roe v. Wade and everybody wanted to get it back to the states, everybody! Everybody wanted it back, Trump explained.
Trump claimed that he deserves credit for returning control over abortion rights to the states, claiming that it was a popular demand. Donnie also stated his agreement with Ronald Reagan, the 40th U.S. President, regarding exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.
“I think it’s very important. Some people don’t, [but] follow your heart. The problem they have, they will take the life of a child in the eighth month and ninth month and even after birth. What happens is we brought it back to the states and the country is now coming together on this issue. It’s been a great thing!” Trump added.
President Biden’s Views On Abortion
However, Vice President Biden scathingly criticized Trump, claiming he had committed a disastrous act deeming it a ‘terrible thing’.
“The fact is that the vast majority of continental scholars supported Roe when it was decided. Now there’s this idea that they’re all against it, it’s just ridiculous! And this is the guy who says the state should be able to have it,” Biden said.
Decisions concerning women’s health should not be made by politicians, according to President Biden. In addition, he affirmed his commitment to restoring Roe v. Wade if elected.
“This idea that the founders want the politicians to be the ones making decisions about women’s health is ridiculous! No politician should make that decision, a doctor should be making those decisions. That’s how it should be run. And if I’m elected I’m going to restore Roe v. Wade,” the president added.
The first of two scheduled meetings between President Biden and Donald Trump was the latest debate. The politicians are scheduled to meet again for a second debate on September 10th, hosted by ABC Network.
