It doesn’t feel like a lot of pressure. I know how important my father’s legacy is and the role he played in the culture and community. I’ve always been someone who wants to carry it forward. I never wanted his legacy to fade because I’ve seen how that happens sometimes. There are huge stars whose light has faded simply because they’re no longer around. I didn’t want that to happen to my father, although I know he’s strong in his own right. I’ve seen that before. But I’ve always felt like it was my job to say, “My father is no longer here, but I know how powerful and meaningful he was.” So I want to carry his legacy forward in every way, whether it’s through clothing, museums, food, or anything else. I always wanted his legacy to live on for his fans. That has always been my mission.
When you started The Biggie Experience, what was your ultimate vision for what you wanted to achieve?
I ran my clothing store, Notorious Clothing, for five years. It was on Atlantic Avenue, just down the street from the Barclays Center. Jay-Z built the Barclays Center, and my dad’s jersey hung there. Since I was in Brooklyn, Biggie fans would often come into the store. I had my dad’s jersey from the “Juicy” video on display, along with some of his awards and other personal items. A lot of fans were really interested in those pieces. They wanted to connect with his clothes and personal history. That gave me the idea to start a museum. I realized that people really want to experience his world and see his stuff up close. That vision became very clear to me over the five years I’ve been running my store.
