During a livestream studio session with PlaqueBoyMax, Lil Yachty previewed an unreleased track that immediately ignited outrage. In it, he raps:
“Put my knee up on her neck, I went George Floyd.”
This disturbing reference to George Floyd’s tragic death in 2020 drew swift condemnation across social media—and from Floyd’s own family.(iHeart, HotNewHipHop)
Terrence Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, didn’t hold back. In a statement to Loren LoRosa, he labeled the lyric “really inconsiderate.” He warned:
“Sometimes this generation doesn’t pay attention to what they say… it may make sense to you but think about the impact to others.”
He stressed that the line “disturbs the family’s peace” and firmly declared:
“I want the line changed. Let my brother rest in peace. … There has to be a better message behind any mention of George Floyd’s name. So his legacy can live on beyond what Chauvin did to him.”
Floyd’s close friend and retired NBA star Stephen Jackson also weighed in, absolutely roasting the lyric. He went live on Instagram to say:
“Lil Yachty, bro. You’ve been wack … You think saying George Floyd’s name in a bar is gonna make people like your wack a* music? That s**t is weak.”*
Jackson criticized the disrespectful tone, saying, “Let somebody die in your family and we’ll do a whole skit about it!”
Thankfully, Jackson later shared that Yachty reached out, apologized, and the two talked it out:
“He made a mistake, we moved on… he apologized… we moved on from it.”(Bossip)
