At the time of her arrest, Clenney, who goes by Courtney Tailor professionally on social media, was reportedly undergoing treatment for substance abuse and post traumatic stress disorder at a rehab center in Hawaii. Her attorney Frank Prieto confirmed the arrest to the Miami Herald.
"We look forward to clearing her name in court."
Clenney pleaded not guilty to the murder charge on August 18, 2022, according to online court records. The case has drawn massive attention due to Clenney's large social media following and the disturbing details surrounding the incident.
The Fatal Dispute Between Clenney And Obumseli
On April 3, 2022, neighbors heard a domestic fight between the couple and called police to their apartment in the Edgewater neighborhood of Miami. According to TMZ, Clenney admitted to police that she had stabbed Obumseli with a knife. Her attorney claimed it was an act of self defense.
Clenney's mother claimed she was on the phone with her daughter during the altercation. She reportedly heard Clenney telling Obumseli to "leave" and accusing him of "lying." According to TMZ, Clenney told authorities after the incident that she was not sure if the stabbing was "justified." She was photographed covered in blood at the scene.
The medical examiner ruled Obumseli's cause of death as a knife wound that punctured the subclavian artery in the right side of his chest. According to Newsweek, it was determined that the wound could not have been caused by a knife thrown from the distance Clenney claimed, which was approximately 10 feet.
Christian Obumseli's Old Tweets Resurfaced After His Death
Following Obumseli's death, old tweets he had posted discussing his dating preferences resurfaced on social media. In the posts, the 27 year old had stated that he did not prefer Black women. His cousin Jessica Nwabuko addressed the controversy in an exclusive interview.
"He was 17 years old. He was a high school kid. I'm pretty sure that everybody who was young was just saying senseless things and not thinking anything of it. I just think his dating preference is white women."
The case has sparked widespread debate about domestic violence, self defense claims, and the role social media fame plays in high profile criminal cases. Clenney remains in custody awaiting trial, with a trial date set for 2025.
