Young Thug YSL Trial On Hold As Its Judge Explores Saving Himself From The Case

The Young Thug YSL RICO trial was put on hold after the presiding judge agreed to have another judge review whether he should recuse himself from the case. The development came after defense attorneys filed motions accusing Judge Ural Glanville of holding improper secret meetings with prosecutors and a key witness in Fulton County.

Young Thug YSL Trial Paused Over Judge Recusal

According to WSB TV, the trial of Young Thug, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, and his co defendants was paused on Monday, July 1, 2024. Attorneys for Thug filed a motion demanding that Judge Glanville step down from the case, citing what they described as an "ex parte meeting" that took place without the defense present.

The controversy erupted two weeks earlier when Judge Glanville jailed one of Young Thug's attorneys, Brian Steel, for contempt of court. Steel had accused the judge of holding an improper meeting with prosecutors and key prosecution witness Kenneth "Woody" Copeland on June 10 to pressure him into testifying. When Steel refused to reveal how he learned about the meeting, the judge had him arrested.

Judge Glanville Was Ultimately Removed From The Case

On July 15, 2024, Superior Court Judge Rachel Krause granted the defense's motion and officially removed Judge Glanville from the case. According to NPR, the recusal came after multiple defendants filed complaints about the improper meetings. Young Thug's lawyers had filed a blistering court document calling the judge "unethical" and accusing him of having "morphed into an essential part of the prosecution team."

The situation grew even more chaotic when a second judge also recused herself after it was revealed that her courtroom deputy had an "inappropriate relationship" with one of the YSL defendants. The trial, which had already set a Georgia state record with a 10 month jury selection process, was thrown into further uncertainty.

How The YSL Trial Eventually Concluded

The YSL RICO trial became the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. Several defendants, including Young Thug, ultimately entered plea agreements during the proceedings. Thug accepted a plea deal that included prison time and other conditions. Other co defendants were acquitted by the jury. The trial officially concluded on December 3, 2024, with the remaining jury verdicts delivered.

The case drew national attention not only for its celebrity defendant but also for the unprecedented legal drama surrounding the judges, the secret meetings, and the sheer length of the proceedings. It raised serious questions about judicial conduct and the fairness of RICO prosecutions targeting hip hop artists and their associates.
