Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars
The 49ers QB injuries are causing concern as the San Francisco 49ers approach their Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both starting quarterback Brock Purdy and backup Mac Jones are dealing with injuries, leaving the team in a precarious position. Fans and analysts alike are keeping a close eye on the situation, wondering who will lead the offense if both are sidelined.
Brock Purdy’s Toe Injury
Brock Purdy has been nursing a toe injury that has limited his practice time this week. The injury, while not considered season-ending, raises questions about his mobility and ability to execute the 49ers’ high-paced offense. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has not confirmed whether Purdy will start in Week 4, keeping fans on edge.

Mac Jones’ Knee Setback
Backup quarterback Mac Jones is also dealing with a knee issue, further complicating San Francisco’s quarterback situation. Jones, who has started games in the past, has been a reliable backup, but his current condition leaves the team relying on third-string quarterback Adrian Martinez, who has yet to take an NFL snap.
Team Impac
The uncertainty at quarterback could affect the 49ers’ performance against the Jaguars, who are coming off a strong win. Analysts predict that the offensive line will need to step up, and the running game will likely carry more responsibility if the quarterbacks are limited. Fans are eagerly awaiting official updates on Purdy and Jones before kickoff.
Expert Analysis
NFL analysts note that managing 49ers QB injuries is critical to the team’s playoff hopes. “If Purdy can’t go, the 49ers have to rely on experience and play-calling to keep the Jaguars defense honest,” said ESPN analyst Adam Schefter. With both quarterbacks banged up, Shanahan’s strategy will be under the microscope.
Brock Purdy ready to return against Jaguars
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will play his first game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday after missing two games with a toe injury, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday.
Shanahan said Purdy looked “sharp” in practice all week and performed “much better” than last week. The undefeated 49ers were preparing for their Week 4 home contest against the Jaguars, who are 2-1.
“That’s what we expected,” Shanahan said of Purdy’s return. “We knew it could go either way, but we considered him an emergency option last week as well—we spoke with him on Monday and Tuesday, and although he wasn’t playing at full speed on Wednesday or Thursday, we could still see his progress.
“If he was feeling fine this morning, we fully expected it.”
Jones, who was a 2021 Pro Bowler in his rookie year with the New England Patriots, threw three touchdown passes against the Saints and then led a 10-play, 63-yard, game-winning drive against the Cardinals, which ended with Eddy Piñeiro’s 35-yard field goal as time expired.
Purdy not only injured his toe in Week 1, but also injured his left shoulder—though it wasn’t as serious.
That same afternoon in Seattle, he rebounded from two interceptions and threw the game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jake Tongs with about 90 seconds remaining. He threw a pass. He threw a pass, setting up a crucial touchdown. The divisional win was assured.
Purdy then explained, “I watched the film and saw how much explosiveness a quarterback really needs. You don’t think about it, but from drops to handoffs, fakes, bootlegs, scrambling—you rely on your toes to cut inside and outside. It’s not something you can hide.”
“I’m ready,” Dart said Wednesday. “… You always say I’m going to prepare the same every week, but really, as a starter, your responsibilities are different, so I’m fully prepared.”
Jaden Daniels’ Status Uncertain
Quarterback Jaden Daniels, who missed Sunday’s win against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a knee sprain, practiced limitedly on Wednesday. “He’s doing everything he can to be ready,” head coach Dan Quinn said.
Daniels also addressed reporters for the first time since Washington’s loss to the Green Bay Packers nearly two weeks ago. Will he play on Sunday? “It’s up to the doctors,” Daniels said. “It’s not my decision.” I’m feeling good.”
Dart’s Giants vs. Chargers Match
Dart’s first NFL game will be against the Los Angeles Chargers, one of the league’s strongest defenses, and that’s no small challenge. Still, the Giants’ core around him is very promising and could ultimately help secure the positions of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Shawn.
“They’re really similar – both natural leaders, two strong quarterbacks who have played very energetic and pressure-based football,” Williams said.
“The difference is that Mac keeps the atmosphere light, while Brock is completely focused. Brock isn’t as funny as Mac. That’s probably the only difference. Both control the huddle. Both play winning games.”
Joe Montana is known for keeping things lighthearted on big occasions. Before his game-winning touchdown drive in Super Bowl XXIII, Montana spotted John Candy in the stands and pointed him out to his teammates in the huddle. Jones also enjoyed similar moments.
Purdy, on the other hand, appears more serious and reserved. This doesn’t mean Jones plays better at quarterback than Purdy, but perhaps that’s why Purdy lost several close games, including the 2024 Super Bowl. When under pressure, he would falter, and his offensive game would decline. His stress may have rubbed off on the rest of the team.
