Last month, William Bryan and his wife Beverly were living in their rental property in Florida when they suddenly felt a sharp pain in the lower left abdomen. They rushed to Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital, where doctors admitted him for tests to check for an abnormality in his spleen. The medical team convinced Bryan to undergo surgery, which tragically resulted in his death because the doctor mistakenly removed his liver and tried to pass it off as an “enlarged spleen,” according to the lawyer representing his widow.
The law firm said on Facebook that General Surgeon Dr. Thomas Schanowski and the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christopher Bacani explained to the hesitant family that Brian needed immediate surgery to avoid serious complications. Mr. Brian agreed and underwent a hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy in August. “Records show that the two physicians discussed the planned procedure and the facility’s ability to handle it,” the law firm noted.
Beverly Bryan hired the law firm to seek justice for her husband and hopes that Dr. Shakanovsky will no longer perform surgeries. “My husband died helplessly on the operating table at the hands of Dr. Shakanovsky. On August 21, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky performed a hand-made laparoscopic splenectomy. During the operation, they removed Brian’s liver and severed the major blood vessels supplying it, causing immediate and catastrophic bleeding that led to Brian’s death.
Records show that Brian repeatedly refused surgery and requested to leave the hospital to see his doctor in Alabama after being admitted on August 18. Zarzaur Law said that Dr. Shakanovsky and another doctor “persuaded” him to undergo the surgery, citing the risk of serious complications. After the surgery, Dr. Shakanovsky told Brian’s wife that her husband’s “spleen” was critically ill, four times its normal size, and had migrated to the opposite side of his body.
