An Arizona father named Joseph Gregory Antonsen was arrested in July 2024 after his 9 year old son Theodore Antonsen was found dead and decomposing on a couch inside their home in Picture Rocks, outside of Tucson. Deputies from the Pima County Sheriff's Department arrived at the residence on July 14 to conduct a wellness check and discovered the boy's body sitting upright on the couch. The home was filled with piles of trash, beer cans, rotting food, dirty diapers, and gallon jugs that appeared to be filled with urine. There was no running water and no working toilets in the residence.
The investigation revealed that Theodore had been deceased on the couch for an extended period of time before anyone contacted authorities. The Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed that the child's body was still in a state of decomposition when deputies made their observations.

What Antonsen Told Investigators
Antonsen told investigators that his son became ill on July 12 and that he observed the boy shuddering and going limp. According to the affidavit, Theodore eventually stopped breathing. Antonsen admitted to investigators that he should have called somebody after his son died, but instead of doing so, he left the home and did not return until July 14, when authorities arrived for the wellness check. He was initially charged with two felony counts of child abuse and one felony count of negligent homicide and was held on a $500,000 bond.
The Sentencing
Antonsen ultimately pleaded guilty to second degree child abuse. In July 2025, he was sentenced to 15 years in a state correctional facility followed by 20 years of probation after his release. The sentencing brought some measure of closure to a case that had horrified people across the country when the details first emerged. The conditions inside the home, combined with the fact that Antonsen left his son's body on the couch for days without calling for help, made the case one of the most disturbing child neglect stories of 2024.
A Community in Shock
The case drew national attention from outlets including People, E! News, The Arizona Republic, and local stations KOLD and KGUN. Many people struggled to understand how a father could watch his child die and then simply leave the house instead of calling 911. The squalid conditions of the home raised additional questions about whether anyone in Theodore's life had been aware of the neglect before it was too late. It remains unclear who requested the wellness check that ultimately led to the discovery of the boy's body.
