The Wing Thief’s Surprising Motivation
According to the woman’s attorney, the massive chicken wing theft wasn’t just a random act of greed—it was the desperate move of someone spiraling into addiction. “My client was caught in the grips of a severe gambling addiction,” the attorney revealed. “She didn’t steal the wings for profit or personal gain. She was trying to keep up with her mounting gambling debts, and things got out of control.”
Social Media Can’t Believe It
As soon as news of the chicken wing caper hit the internet, social media went into overdrive. Memes, jokes, and disbelief flooded timelines, with many questioning how someone could even manage to steal that much chicken. “How do you even hide $1.5 million in wings? Asking for a friend,” one user joked on Twitter. Another commented, “So she was betting with wings instead of chips?”
A Gambling Problem Gone Wild
The attorney went on to explain that his client’s addiction had escalated to the point where she was making irrational decisions just to keep her habit going. “She was drowning in debt and felt like she had no other options. The wings were easy to move, and she saw them as a quick way to get cash,” he said. “It’s a tragic story of how addiction can push someone to do the unthinkable.”
What’s Next for the Wing Thief?
While the woman awaits trial, her attorney is pushing for leniency, arguing that her actions were driven by addiction rather than malicious intent. “We’re hoping the court will consider her addiction as a mitigating factor,” the attorney stated. “She’s ready to take responsibility and get the help she needs.”
The Community Reacts
As the story continues to unfold, the local community is left in shock, not just by the sheer amount of wings stolen, but by the tragic circumstances that led to the crime. “It’s crazy to think that something like this could happen,” one local resident said. “But it just goes to show how serious gambling addiction can be.”
The Unlikely Crime That’s Now a Cautionary Tale
This wild tale of chicken wings and gambling addiction serves as a bizarre but powerful reminder of how addiction can lead people down dangerous paths. As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes will be on how the courts handle this one-of-a-kind case. One thing’s for sure—this is a story that no one will forget anytime soon.
Lawyer blames theft on gambling addiction
Vera Liddell, a former Illinois school cafeteria consultant who was sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings from a local district, allegedly committed the crime to support her gambling habit.
“She is a sweet woman who struggled with gambling issues,” her lawyer, Patrick O’Byrne, told PEOPLE. “She feels horrible about what happened. This behavior is completely inappropriate for her. Her addiction got the better of her.”
On Aug. 9, the 68-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft of more than $1 million and was sentenced to nine years, according to records from the Sixth Municipal District Circuit Court in Cook County.
Jones’ team confirmed to PEOPLE that they are “in contact with Ms. Liddell’s attorney to gather the details of the case.”
It’s unclear whether Jones’ potential offer could affect his sentence. Liddell’s attorneys say he has 30 days after sentencing to withdraw his plea and request compensation instead.
PEOPLE reached out to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for clarification but did not immediately receive a response.
Details of the embezzlement scheme
As the district’s food services director, Liddell handled food orders from a major supplier, Gordon Food Services. Between July 2020 and February 2022, she carried out a massive embezzlement scheme, placing numerous unauthorized orders for chicken wings during the COVID-19 pandemic and diverting them from the district’s supply. The meals were for students learning remotely.
“The massive theft occurred during the COVID period when students were unable to attend school in person,” the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office document states. “Even with remote learning, the district continued to provide meals for students to pick up from home.”
Search and investigation
The scheme came to light in January 2022 when a mid-year audit found that the food services department had exceeded its annual budget by more than $300,000. The district’s business manager then reviewed invoices and discovered unauthorized orders for chicken wings — an item that was rarely served because of its bones.
Surveillance video showed Liddell using a district cargo van to collect chicken wings, which never made it to the students or the school.
