Florida man sentenced to life in prison in courtroom after explosive fight over dog poop
A South Florida man was furious during his sentencing Thursday, yelling at the widow of a man killed in a 2015 fight that started over dog poop.
Omar Rodriguez, 75, yelled at Lisette Rey — the widow of Jose Rey, whom he shot nearly a decade ago — after the fight broke out when Rey’s dog went to rest on Rodriguez’s son’s lawn.
“Your husband was a coward,” Rodriguez shouted in court. “That’s why I killed him! … He cried like a baby.”
His lawyer, Bruce Lehr, confirmed the vehement protest to NBC News in a phone interview Friday.
“This all started with neighbors protesting Mr. Rodriguez,” Lehr said. “The tension and resentment on both sides eventually boiled over, leading to a tragic death.”
In an emotional statement, Lisette Ray expressed her disappointment that the death penalty was not being considered. “I wish the death penalty had been an option,” she said. “Mr. Rodriguez could still see his family — I’ll never see my husband again. I barely heard him speak. His words mean nothing to me. He’s irrelevant to me now — he’s the scum of the pond.”
Rodriguez was convicted in May of second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the June 2015 killing of Jose Ray. The jury deliberated for nearly six hours before returning a guilty verdict. Rodriguez was charged with assault after threatening Ray’s wife during an argument.
Police said Ray was walking his dog in his Kendall neighborhood when Rodriguez allegedly let the dog defecate in his son’s yard, leading to a deadly argument.
Chaos in courtroom marks end of 9-year legal battle
During Thursday’s hearing, witnesses gasped and screamed as Rodriguez jumped out of his seat and Lisette read his victim’s statement.
The incident, captured on video, showed Rodriguez’s lack of remorse as the judge sentenced him to a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years, ending a nine-year legal battle.
Rodriguez, 75, was convicted in May of second-degree murder and aggravated assault. “We, the jury, have convicted the defendant,” the foreperson declared.
Authorities said Rodriguez confronted 52-year-old Jose Rey with a gun and pulled the trigger after a heated argument. Rey, a husband and father of two, died days after the shooting.
On Thursday, a judge sentenced him to life in prison, bringing long-awaited justice to Rey’s family.
