Shocking Details of Ayla Miller’s Injuries
According to the criminal complaint, 3-year-old Ayla Miller was cold to the touch, had bruises on the right side of her neck and waist, extensive bruising on both sides of her face, a scratch or mark near her sternum, bruises on her arms and blood on the bed where she slept. The bruise on her face appeared dark near her right eye, with a clear impact mark in the center of the bruise. Investigators also noted an infected wound and a cigarette burn mark on her ankle.
Court documents show that police spoke with a man who had a nine-minute conversation with Johnson a few hours after Ayla’s death. During the conversation, Johnson immediately apologized and admitted that two days earlier, he had punched Ayla in the face, causing her to fall backward and hit her head on the coffee table. She then left Ayla in bed for several days until her death. According to the complaint, Johnson also admitted in a lengthy text that he “would hit her butt to make her listen.”
Charges and further injuries
According to a criminal complaint and affidavit of probable cause obtained by Law & Crime, 56-year-old Dennis Johnson has been charged with one count of first-degree criminal murder, three counts of aggravated assault and one count each of child endangerment, abuse of a corpse and corruption of a minor.
Court documents note that Ayla had deep bruises on the left side of her face, above her cheekbone, below her eye and near her ear. There was a visible bruise on her left hip near her left hip. There were bruises on her right side, from her ear to her chest. Her right arm, from her elbow to her hand, was also bruised. Investigators reported an infected wound on her right ankle and a cigarette burn on her left ankle. They also noted a scratch or bruise on her sternum.
Later, Johnson’s sister was taken to police headquarters to give a statement. She described a “nine-minute conversation” that took place just before 2:30 p.m. in which Johnson began by apologizing. Johnson admitted that he punched Ayla in the face, causing her to fall onto the coffee table and hit her head hard. He then picked Ayla up but didn’t know what to do, leaving her in bed for the next few days, until Ayla was eventually pronounced dead.
According to a grandson who told investigators, Ayla’s nose and head were bleeding, oozing blood, and eventually drying up during the attack. The attack took place in Johnson’s bedroom, and the defendant is accused of using multiple instruments during the prolonged beating.
“Ayla left us too soon,” the online fundraiser shares. “She loved Cocomelon and Minnie Mouse so much. Her smile could light up any room. Ayla touched so many hearts in her short time here. She will be greatly missed. Any support would be greatly appreciated.”
