A Fateful Encounter: Lauren London Meets Nipsey Hussle

In a heartfelt interview, actress Lauren London opened up about the serendipitous moment she met rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle, describing it as “written in the stars.” Their paths crossed in 2013, leading to a deep connection that would profoundly impact both their lives.

The Gift That Sparked a Connection

While working on a film set, Lauren wanted to gift her co-workers with Crenshaw merchandise to show appreciation. She reached out to a friend, Danny, to inquire about purchasing items from Nipsey’s store. Although she didn’t receive a discount, she proceeded with the purchase and distributed the gifts. Later, she followed Nipsey on social media, leading to a direct message exchange where he thanked her for the support and offered to send her a personal package. Their conversation quickly moved to text messages, marking the beginning of their relationship.

A Relationship Built on Respect and Understanding

Lauren and Nipsey’s relationship was characterized by mutual respect and understanding. They often shared insights about their bond, with Lauren noting,

“We never argued or fought. But I would be crazy sometimes, and in those moments, he never lost his cool.”

Their connection was not only romantic but also deeply rooted in shared values and aspirations.

Their relationship was marked by shared moments of joy and mutual support. From attending events together to supporting each other’s endeavors, Lauren and Nipsey’s bond was a testament to their deep connection and commitment to one another.

Lauren London on Healing, Love, and Loss

London shared that while she’s focused on finding peace and celebrating both her parenting and career milestones — including “success at work, connecting with people, and finding love” — she still feels the pain of “wishing someone would come here to watch a movie with me.”

“I don’t want to mislead people into thinking I’m at peace and floating on clouds,” London told People Every Day host Janine Rubenstein. “I wake up every day with the intention of facing it, because some days I don’t want to, and the anger shows up. Healing moves in every direction — it’s highs, lows, and everything in between. And with every step forward, there’s a new level.”

She added, “I still wish he was here, so every day becomes a choice. I’m making that choice consciously, but I don’t want anyone to assume that everything is perfect and rosy. I think when you set your intentions on how you want to be in life, it feels softer and more compassionate than harsh.”

Speaking of Nipsey, she said, “He was right, and I feel the same way. Mutual respect, maturity, and a shared desire to do meaningful work were responsible for a real friendship. Plus, we’re both from Los Angeles — we had more in common than most people think.”

London recalled a favorite moment on set, which was filmed alongside Long, Murphy, Hill, Louis-Dreyfus, and Duchovny. “Watching Eddie, Julia, David, Nia, and Jonah — who I call the improv masters — was like a masterclass. The laughter, the stories about Eddie and Julia’s SNL days, and asking Nia about Boyz N the Hood because I grew up on it — those are my best memories.”

On Instagram, London wrote, “I’ve been holding my breath all March, because I know your day of transition will come. Ancient wisdom helps, but pain is pain — nothing feels the same.” She called Nipsey, who was born Jeremiah Joseph Asgedom, “an eternal being,” ending with “I love you” and a verse from the Baha’i scriptures.

Support came from friends like Taraji P. Henson, who wrote, “Sending you love and prayers sister,” and YG, who added, “Love sister.” Lauren shares 6-year-old son Cross with Nipsey, whom she met on social media in 2013. They have largely kept their relationship private.

“Healing doesn’t happen in a straight line — it goes up, down, and sideways. I’ll never be done with it,” the You People actress admitted. Still, she finds strength in honoring his spirit: “Everything I do, I always keep him in my heart.”

Nipsey Hussle’s tragic death in 2019 was one of the most difficult moments of the year. Fans, family, and friends flocked to Los Angeles’ Staples Center to pay their respects to the rapper, who was killed outside a Marathon clothing store on March 31. As the new year and decade began, London struggled to cope with life without her longtime partner.

She shared a New Year’s message on Instagram: “2019 changed my life forever. My existence changed. Half of me is in heaven, and the other half is here to stay.”

In her April 2019 memorial, the Games People Play star read a touching message she sent: “Ermias, I feel pure joy when I’m around you. I feel safe, secure, like you’re my shield. You’ve helped me grow as a woman, and you’ve given me the opportunity to truly love a man. I wouldn’t want this journey with anyone else. You’ve given me the best boyfriend I’ve ever had.”

Keeping her promise, she continues to run in the London Marathon. She teamed up with PUMA for the “Forever Stronger” campaign, where she read a poem honoring Nipsey, written by her sister Samantha Smith.

Women, Legacy, and Financial Empowerment

Jesse and D’Lila Combs clearly inherited their runway confidence from their late mother, Kim Porter. The twins are making their way into fashion, most recently walking Liberty and Justice in matching bikinis and thigh-length braids. Their mother must be smiling as she carries on her legacy.

But beyond fashion, women everywhere must be preparing for the future. While women are poised to lead this new financial era, obstacles remain—from pay gaps and career hiatuses to historically low financial literacy and confidence in investing. As Candice explains, “The momentum is here, but we must continue to reshape the future with clear goals for family and legacy. Curiosity and asking questions build the courage and confidence to overcome challenges and protect what we’ve built.”

When women invest, they often focus on education, family, and community. Nikki reflects this mindset: “I grew up believing that every generation should improve in these key areas.” Greater financial freedom can help women avoid toxic workplaces, unhealthy relationships, and
