Who Is Tim Westwood?
Tim Westwood worked as a radio presenter at the BBC for nearly 20 years, becoming a household name in the UK during the 1990s. He presented shows on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra between 1994 and 2013, where he became known as one of the UK’s most prominent hip-hop media personalities.
Westwood allegedly raped three women between 1995 and 2010, which was during the years that he worked as a BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ. He left the BBC in 2013.
Previous Allegations and Documentary
Allegations against Westwood arose in 2022 following a joint investigation conducted by the BBC and the Guardian, which brought to light the accounts of seven Black women who alleged sexual touching and sexual misconduct by Westwood between 1992 and 2017.
The allegations were featured in the BBC Three documentary, “Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power”. As early as 2020, claims that Westwood behaved inappropriately with predominantly Black female fans began to appear on Twitter using the hashtag #SurvivingTimWestwood.
Metropolitan Police Investigation
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy stated: “It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature”, acknowledging the bravery of the women who came forward.
The Metropolitan Police began an investigation of Westwood’s sexual offenses in August 2022 and submitted evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service in November 2024.
Crown Prosecution Service Statement
Lionel Idan, Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Tim Westwood for a series of serious sexual offences. Our prosecutors have established that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings”.
The CPS reminded the public that “criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial,” emphasizing that “It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings”.
BBC Response to Tim Westwood Allegations
Earlier in 2025, the BBC published the findings of a review into what it knew about the conduct of Westwood. According to the report, there was “no widespread or significant BBC knowledge of allegations or concerns about predatory sexual behaviour” by Westwood during his time at the BBC from 1994 to 2013.
