Judge Whitaker takes charge in Young Thug trial, rejects mistrial motions
ATLANTA, GA (Atlanta News First) – The new presiding judge in Young Thug’s high-profile criminal trial wasted no time Tuesday morning, quickly denying two defense motions for a mistrial and denying the prosecution’s request to bar defense attorneys from speaking to the media.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker also declined to reconsider a bond request by Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steele.
Whitaker began the 102nd day of on-the-record proceedings at 8:45 a.m., a stark contrast to former Presiding Judge Ural Glanville, who often started sessions much later despite a 9 a.m. schedule.
Steele argued, “There is no reason to believe that Mr. Williams will flee. It would be illogical because if he did, the trial would continue without him, and he would lose his appeal rights. He has deep ties to his community and the support of people around the world.”
Judge Whitaker responded, “Unless circumstances change legally, I am not reconsidering any previous bond rulings. These do not meet the Ayala factors, so I am not reopening the bond issue.”
